I love bubble tea. Yet I have never thought about the World’s bubble tea origin until I found this cafe online before going to Taichung. I went searching for other things that might be interesting in Taichung besides the famous Fengjia Night Market, which is said to be the trend setter for the country. So I chanced upon this cafe which claims to be the origin of Pearl Milk Tea, a.k.a Bubble Tea in 1983 that swept across the world.
We stayed near Fengjia Night Market and took a taxi to Chun Shui Tang Origin Shop (春水堂創始店). There are many branches of Chun Shui Tang, not only in Taichung but also in Taipei. Since we are in Taichung, we decided to visit the shop where bubble tea first started. The taxi ride costs us around NT250 and took us about 15-20min.
You cannot miss the shop as they have a huge cup of pearl milk tea right outside. The traditional Chinese deco, yet with a touch of modern taste, was the first indication that we made the right choice in coming here. There is nothing fancy about the shop and runs similarly as any other eateries.
I ordered the Soy Sauce Braised Pork Chop (私房肉排飯) under the Speciality Dishes category, which is served only 11:30-14:00 and 17:00-20:00 which cost only NT139. What a generous serving of pork chop! I really enjoyed it, together with the soup. My friends ordered the noodles, which were NT95 each, and they were awesome too.
The Pearl Milk Tea is a definite must. The brew of the tea is fragrant and aromatic, plus the right consistency of the pearls. Perfect!
I will definitely plan a meal here when I am in Taichung again. Here’s the address for those who will like to visit:

I recommend a 15-20min walk from the cafe after the satisfying meal to Miyahara, the famous bakery with amazing interior decoration, for more sweets. The walk brings you to Taichung City Hall and several Taiyang Biscuit (太陽餅) confectionaries.
